Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Completes 11 years Since its Inception
On January 22 2026, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), a Government of India(GoI) backed small savings scheme launched under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Campaign, completed 11 years.
- As of December 2025, 4.53 crore accounts have been opened and total deposits amount to more than Rs 3.33 lakh crore.
About Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY):
Launch: The SSY was launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on 22 January 2015 under the BBBP Campaign.
Administrative Authority: The SSY is administered by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the Ministry of Finance(MoF)
About Sukanya Samriddhi Account(SSA):
SSA: It is an account that holds the funds deposited towards the SSY scheme.
Account Access: Parents or legal guardians can open an account for their Indian girl child at any India Post office or branch of any Public Sector Bank (PSB) and authorised Private Sector Banks (HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and IDBI Bank).
Age Limit: The account may be opened anytime from the birth of the girl child until she attains the age of 10 years.
Account Restrictions: Only one SSA is permitted per girl child, and a family can open accounts for a maximum of two girl children.
Deposit Limit: The minimum initial deposit of Rs 250 in the SSA, and subsequent deposits can be made in multiples of Rs 50, provided that at least Rs 250 is deposited in a financial year (FY).
- The total annual deposit limit is capped at Rs 1,50,000, any excess amount will not earn interest and will be returned.
Tenure: Deposits can be made for a period of up to 15 years from the account opening date.
Interest Rate: The SSY currently offers an interest rate of 8.2% per annum(p.a), with rates reviewed quarterly and interest credited annually.
Maturity: The SSA matures upon the completion of 21 years of its opening date.

On January 21, 2026, Jose Manuel Albares, Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Spain undertook a one-day official visit to India at the invitation of Dr. S. Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
- The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Spain, which were established in 1956.
Highlights of the Visit:
Bilateral Meetings: During his visit to India, Spain FM Jose Manuel Albares held a bilateral meeting with Union Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, MEA at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi, Delhi. They reviewed India-Spain relations, including trade, investment, defense, culture, tourism, and people-to-people ties.
- He also met President of India, Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Indo‑Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI): During the visit, Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares presented the ‘Declaration of Accession’ to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, formally joining the IPOI.

GoI Releases NeSDA Way Forward Monthly Report- December 2025
On January 22, 2026, The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions (MoPPG&P), Government of India (GoI), released the 32nd edition of the National electronic (e)-Governance Service Delivery Assessment (NeSDA)- Way Forward Monthly Report, covering the progress up to December 2025.
Highlights of the 32nd NeSDA Way Forward Monthly Report:
E-Services: As of December 2025, a total of 24,090 e-services are provided across States and UTs, with the largest share of 8,656 services in the Local Governance & Utility Services sector. 156 new services were added in November 2025.
Saturation of Mandatory e-Services: 22 States and UTs achieved over 90% saturation of 59 mandatory e-services, namely Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh (AP), Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh (HP), Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), and Karnataka.
- It also includes Kerala, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu (TN), Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Uttarakhand, and West Bengal (WB).

In January 2026, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), expanded the scope of the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) by notifying Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity (GEI) targets for 4 additional carbon-intensive industrial sectors, bringing them under the compliance framework of the Indian Carbon Market (ICM).

About GEI Targets:
Overview: GEI targets specify the amount of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions per unit of output that an industry is allowed to emit. It creates a market-based incentive for industries to reduce emissions efficiently.
Emission Reduction: Each entity must reduce its emission intensity to meet the prescribed level. The entities performing better than their targets earn Carbon Credit Certificates (CCCs).
- The entities failing to meet targets must buy these certificates from the market.
Earlier Notification: The first set of GEI targets was issued in October 2025 for the Aluminium(Al), Cement, Chlor-Alkali, and Pulp & Paper sectors, covering 282 entities.

Overview: It was notified in 2023, with an aim to reduce or avoid GHG emissions across the Indian economy by putting a price on carbon through a trading system.

Future Plans: LMC is planning to set up a 15 Mega Watt (MW)Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant at Shivari. The proposed plant is expected to convert RDF from waste into electricity.
India De-licenses Lower 6 Gigahertz Spectrum for Wi-Fi Services
In January 2026, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, notified the de-licensing of the lower 6 Gigahertz (GHz) band, frequencies ranging between 5925 megahertz (MHz) to 6425 MHz, to boost Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) services in India. Habitat: The species inhabits underground soil and humus at the base of lateritic plateaus in the Satara region of the Western Ghats.
Ecology: Named after the Maharshi Valmiki Mandir near Paneri, Palashi (Maharashtra), the species aerates soil by burrowing, controls soil invertebrates, and serves as prey for birds, reptiles, and small mammals.

Goa Govt Signs MoU with Starlink for Digital Connectivity and Disaster Resilience
In January 2026, the Department of Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (DITE&C), Government of Goa, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited (SSCPL) (Starlink India) to strengthen the digital infrastructure, connectivity, and disaster resilience of the state by leveraging satellite-based broadband solutions.

Punjab Launches ‘Mukhya Mantri Sehat Yojana’ to Provide Free Cashless Healthcare
On January 22, 2026, Bhagwant Mann, Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab, launched a state-wide universal healthcare scheme ‘Mukhya Mantri Sehat Yojna(MMSY)’, to provide free cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh to every family in the state

Ayushman Bharat Top-Up: Existing beneficiaries receive an additional Rs.5 lakh, bringing total coverage to Rs.10 lakh.
