MoH&FW releases the 10th NHA estimates for FY23; GHE jumps to Rs 3.85 lakh Cr
In May 2026, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) released the National Health Accounts (NHA) estimates for India for financial year 2022-23 (FY23), the 10th report on health expenditure estimates.

• The report highlighted that Government Health Expenditure (GHE) increased from Rs 1.30 lakh crore (Cr) in 2013-14 to Rs 3.85 lakh Cr in 2022-23, stating higher public investment in the health sector.

Key Highlights
NHA: The NHA serves as a vital tool, offering comprehensive insights into the sources, scale, and patterns of health expenditure across various entities within India’s health system.
Prepared by: The report is prepared by the National Health Accounts Technical Secretariat (NHATS), National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC), MoH&FW, using the System of Health Accounts (2011) framework.
Total Health Expenditure (THE): In FY23, the THE for India is estimated at Rs 8.81 Cr, 3.37% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with base year 2022-23.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Inaugurates PECVD System and RETINA incubation centre at IACS Campus in Kolkata, WB
In May 2026, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science & Technology (MoST)  inaugurated two key initiatives namely: Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) system and Research Entrepreneurship for Translation, Innovation and NAvigation (RETINA), on the occasion of 150 years celebrations  of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), one of India’s most iconic scientific institutions,  at IACS’s campus in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB).

• IACS holds historic scientific  significance as it is the birthplace of the discovery of the Raman Effect was made by Nobel laureate Sir C.V. Raman on February 28, 1928.

Key Details:
PECVD: It is developed indigenously at IACS campus for fabrication of India’s 1st amorphous silicon solar cell, reflecting the scientific self-reliance under the Government of India (GoI)’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

• The newly launched system, developed under the leadership of Ashok Kumar Barua, marked a major step in India’s renewable energy research.

RETINA: The newly inaugurated incubation centre  is designed to support the commercialisation of scientific research and promote startup-driven innovation.

DARPG Launches ‘NeSDA 2025 Portal’ to Assess Digital Public Service Delivery
In May 2026, the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions(MoPP&P), launched the Portal for the National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment (NeSDA), 2025 for comprehensive assessment of E-governance (electronic governance) Service Delivery.
About NeSDA 2025 Portal:
Framework: NeSDA is a biennial assessment framework developed by DARPG to measure the depth and effectiveness of existing e-Governance service delivery mechanisms from the citizen’s perspective.
Categories: All Government Portals assessed under NeSDA are classified into two categories:

• State, UT, City and Central Ministry Portals
• State, UT, City and Central Ministry Service Portals.

Focus Sectors: The framework covers a wide range of Government-to-Citizen (G2C) and Government-to-Business (G2B) services across key sectors including finance, labour and employment, education, local governance and utilities, social welfare, environment, tourism, public grievances and transport.

RITES and CRISIL Sign MoU to Develop Data-driven Infrastructure Consultancy Solutions 
In May 2026, RITES Limited, formerly known as Rail India Technical and Economic Service, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited (CRISIL) Limited to jointly develop data-driven infrastructure consultancy solutions across multiple sectors in India and overseas.
Key Details of MoU:
Objective: The partnership aims to strengthen analytical and advisory support for infrastructure projects through market intelligence, data validation, financial due diligence, valuation support and the development of analytical models for consultancy assignments undertaken by RITES.
Strategic Partnership:  The MoU combines RITES’ transport infrastructure expertise with CRISIL’s advanced data analytics and research capabilities to deliver integrated consultancy solutions for infrastructure projects.
Coverage: The MoU enables both organisations to jointly pursue consultancy projects across transport, energy, water, hydropower, wastewater, and industrial infrastructure sectors.
Focus Areas: This partnership will boost analytical and advisory inputs for various infrastructure projects by leveraging market, intelligence, data validation, financial due diligence, and valuation support.

• It will also focus on developing analytical models to directly enhance consultancy assignments undertaken by RITES.

IAF Partners with IIT Bombay for Su-30MKI Predictive Maintenance System
In May 2026, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed three contracts with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), Mumbai, Maharashtra, to indigenously develop Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven predictive maintenance technologies, including a digital diagnostic health index for the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter aircraft fleet.

• The signing ceremony was presided over by Air Marshal KAA Sanjeeb,  Director General (DG) (Aircraft), IAF and Shireesh B Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay.

Key Details of Partnership:
Predictive Maintenance Initiative: The collaboration focuses on adopting predictive, prognostic, and prescriptive maintenance technologies for the Su-30MKI fleet using indigenous expertise developed at IIT Bombay.
Operational Readiness: The system is expected to improve aircraft availability, reduce service and maintenance costs, and strengthen mission readiness of the IAF’s frontline fighter fleet.
Indigenous Technology Development: The maintenance framework will be developed using fully indigenous know-how and advanced data-driven engineering solutions evolved at IIT Bombay, supporting India’s self-reliance goals in defence technologies.
Su-30MKI: It is a twin-engine, multi-role fighter aircraft operated by the IAF, developed by Sukhoi, Russia, and customised for India under a licence-production agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

IIT-M Unveils Rs 4.5 Crore Circulating Water Tunnel Facility in Chennai, TN
In May 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), Chennai, Tamil Nadu(TN), launched the Circulating Water Tunnel Facility, an advanced hydrodynamic testing facility in Thaiyur, near Chennai, TN.

• The newly launched research facility is designed to strengthen indigenous ship design, ocean engineering research and hydrodynamic testing capabilities in the country.

About Maritime Research Facility:
Funding: The new research facility was constructed with Rs 4.5 crore in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), a Navratna defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).
Facility: The newly established Circulating Water Tunnel Facility is designed to strengthen India’s capabilities in ocean engineering, ship design, naval architecture, hydrodynamics, and offshore engineering research.
Research Applications: The facility will support research and testing in ship design, marine vehicles, naval technologies, offshore structures, fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics, and ocean engineering systems.
Future Collaborations: Also, both IIT–M and MDL are exploring  new avenues  to foster collaborations in advanced maritime and naval technologies.

NSE and SUFI Signs MoU To Develop Steel Commodity Derivatives Ecosystem 
In May 2026, National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE), India’s largest stock exchange, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Steel Users Federation of India (SUFI) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to develop the steel and commodity derivatives ecosystem.

Key Details of MoU:
Focus: The collaboration will focus on exchange-traded derivatives, hedging mechanisms against steel price volatility, product design, industry consultations, market outreach and capacity-building programmes for India’s steel sector.
NSE: It will develop the derivatives trading platform for steel commodity products.
Significance: The initiative strengthens India’s commodity derivatives market by supporting industrial price stability, reducing risks from steel price volatility and aligning India’s globally significant steel sector with international financial market practices.
Benefit: The ecosystem will benefit steel manufacturers, processors, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), infrastructure companies and end-users.
Steel Production Growth: India’s crude steel production increased by nearly 11% year-on-year to 168.4 million tonnes(MT) in Financial Year 2025-26(FY26) and is projected to reach 300 million tonnes by 2030.

WBGB & Canara HSBC Life Insurance Partner to Strengthen Rural Insurance Coverage in WB
In May 2026, West Bengal Gramin Bank (WBGB), one of India’s largest Regional Rural Banks (RRBs),  collaborated with Canara HSBC Life Insurance Company Limited (“Canara HSBC Life Insurance”) to strengthen life insurance coverage across rural and semi-urban areas of West Bengal (WB).

• The collaboration was formalized in the presence of Alok K. Goel, Chairman of WBGB and Soly Thomas, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Distribution Officer (CDO) of Canara HSBC Life Insurance.

Key Details of Collaboration:
Network: Under this newly formed collaboration, Canara HSBC Life Insurance will use WBGB’s network of 960 branches across the state, to offer its insurance products.
Key Offerings: The strategic partnership will provide access to a wide range of life insurance products, supporting protection, savings, long-term wealth creation, and family financial security,  for WBGB customers.
Canara HSBC Life Insurance: Established in 2007, Canara HSBC Life Insurance is a joint venture between Canara Bank and HSBC Insurance (Asia Pacific) Holdings Limited, offering a range of life insurance solutions across India.

Japan’s DBJ partners HDFC Capital to invest in housing projects across India 
In May 2026, Japanese financial institution Development Bank of Japan (DBJ) entered into a strategic partnership with HDFC Capital Advisors Limited (HDFC Capital ), one of India’s largest real estate private equity funds, to invest in real estate funds, with a total targeted corpus of USD 1 billion, for the construction of affordable and mid-income housing projects in India.

• This collaboration marks DBJ 1st-ever real investment in India.

Key Details of Partnership:
Investment Vehicle: Under this collaboration, DBJ has pledged capital to the HDFC Capital Development of Real Estate Affordable and Mid-Income Fund (H-DREAM Fund) which is managed by the HDFC Capital Advisors Limited.
Funding Structure: As per the strategic partnership, the H-DREAM fund has target fund corpus of USD 500 million, including  USD 500 million green shoe option.

• So far, the target fund has secured over USD 350 million in commitments.

Investment Route: The investment in H-DREAM is made via HDFC Capital’s offshore feeder fund structure, set up under the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) framework at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Taiwan Overtakes India To Become World’s 5th Largest Stock Market 
In May 2026, Taiwan Stock Exchange surpassed India to become world’s fifth largest stock market, with market capitalisation reaching USD 4.95 trillion compared to India’s USD 4.92 trillion amid Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) outflows.

• The rise was driven by the artificial intelligence (AI)-led semiconductor boom led by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), despite India having a higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

About Global Stock Market Rankings 2026:
Rankings: The top global equity markets are the United States of America (USA), China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India and South Korea.
Taiwan: Taiwan’s rally was led by TSMC, whose shares surged around 45–50% in 2026, accounted for nearly 42% of the Taiex index and benefited from relaxed domestic fund investment limits raised from 10% to 25%.
India: Faced FPI outflows, benchmark declines and reduced Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Emerging Markets Index weight due to slower growth, high valuations, limited AI-linked firms, rising costs and global capital shifts towards Taiwan and South Korea.
Significance: The rankings reflect the dominance of the AI-driven investment cycle, the growing importance of semiconductor supply chains and changing global capital allocation trends across emerging markets.

TCS Signs Multi-million Dollar Deal with Sweden’s SKF for AI-led Manufacturing Business
In May 2026, Tata Consulting Services (TCS), India’s leading Multi-National Company (MNC), signed a Multi-million dollar agreement with Swedish industrial manufacturer, SKF, to rollout next-generation Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform.
Key Details of Deal:
Objectives: The collaboration aims to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) across Information Technology (IT) systems, business operations to enhance customer experience and support long-term growth.
Significance: Under this strategic partnership, TCS will help SKF to build future-ready digital enterprise, by integrating centralized AI-enabled systems to transform industrial manufacturing business.
Key Service: As per the agreement, TCS will provide end-to-end managed services across applications (apps), infrastructure, data, end-user services, security, and connectivity for SKF across the world.

Janez Janša Appointed as Prime Minister of Slovenia for Fourth Term
In May 2026, nationalist politician Janez Janša, the leader of the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), was elected as the Prime Minister(PM) of Slovenia for a fourth term, securing 51 votes in Parliament and obtaining support to form a new coalition government.

• He succeeded Robert Golob as the PM of Slovenia.

Background:
Parliamentary Approval: Janez Janša received 51 votes in the 90-member National Assembly, paving the way for the formation of a new government.
Coalition Government: His Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) formed a centre-right coalition with allied parties, ending the political deadlock that followed the 2026 parliamentary elections.

Red Balloon Aerospace Launched India’s 1st Stratospheric SPB  in Vijayawada, AP
In May 2026, India’s space startup company, Red Balloon Aerospace Private Limited launched India’s 1st indigenous Stratospheric Super Pressure Balloon (SPB) named “VISTA” as part of Mission SANA,  at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh (AP).

• With the successful launch of SPB, India is now among the world’s five countries with indigenous stratospheric balloon capability, joining the United States of America (USA), France, Japan, and China.

Key Details of Mission:
Platform: “VISTA”, the super-pressure platform, ascended to approximately 25 kilometers (kms) above Earth, carried payloads from 07 national and international partners.
Purpose: The platform carried payloads to test biological experiments, propulsion systems, earth observation sensors, onboard computing platforms, and navigation technologies.
Technology: The VISTA platform uses SPB technology that helps in maintaining a stable altitude for weeks or even months without losing gas during day-night temperature changes.

OBITUARY

Urdu Poet and Padma Shri Awardee Bashir Badr Passed Away 
In May 2026, renowned Urdu poet and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Bashir Badr passed away at the age of 91 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP). He was born in 1935 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh (UP).

• The Government of India (GoI) awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 to Bashir Badr in the field of Literature and Education for his contribution towards literature.

Awards: As collection of 69 ghazals, is considered a Masterpiece of Bashir Badr’s poetry and earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award (Urdu) in 1999.

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2026 – May 29 
International Day of United Nations(UN) Peacekeepers, observed annually across the globe on 29 May to honours the dedication, service, and sacrifice of UN peacekeepers worldwide, while remembering those who lost their lives in the cause of peace.

• 29 May 2026 marks the 78th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping, which began in 1948 with the deployment of military observers to the Middle East under the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).
• 2026 Theme: “Invest in Peace”

Background:
Origin:  The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through Resolution 57/129 in 2002.
1st Observance:  It was first observed on 29 May 2003.
Organiser:  The observance is coordinated by the UN and its Department of Peace Operations (DPO), with participation from UN Member States.
Symbol:  The UN Blue Helmet/Beret symbolizes UN peacekeeping efforts worldwide.
1st Mission:  The United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) became the first UN peacekeeping mission, launched on 29 May 1948.

World Digestive Health Day 2026 – May 29 
World Digestive Health Day (WDHD) is observed on May 29 every year across the globe to raise awareness about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, initiated by the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO).

• 2026 Theme: “Chronic Diarrhea: Don’t Flush the Signs Away.”

Background:
Origin: On May 29, 1958, the WGO was formally established at the last day of 1st World Congress of Gastroenterology in Washington, the United States of America (USA).
Commemoration: WDHD was established to commemorate the 45th anniversary of WGO in 2003.
First Observance: The 1st ever WDHD was observed on 29 May 2004. 

International Everest Day 2026– May 29 
International Everest Day is observed annually on 29 May across the globe to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay on 29 May 1953.

• The day celebrates human endurance, courage, resilience, and the spirit of exploration.

Background:
Origin: Initiated by the Government of Nepal to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
1st Observance:  International Everest Day was first observed in Nepal on 29 May 2008.
2026 Summit: The second edition of the Everest Summiteers Summit 2026, organised by Everest Alliance Nepal in collaboration with Nepal’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, was held in Kathmandu(Nepal), where 176 Mount Everest climbers from 26 countries were honoured with special medals and certificates.

West Bengal Government begins Annapurna Yojana Enrolment Process
In May 2026, the West Bengal (WB) government officially began enrolment for the Annapurna Yojana, also known as the Annapurna Bhandar scheme, which aims to promote women’s empowerment and support household finances.
Key Highlights
Purpose: The purpose of this scheme is to support women who do not have any fixed income source, government salary or pension.
Eligibility: The Annapurna Yojana is a women’s welfare scheme introduced by the WB government to provide monthly financial assistance to eligible women aged between 25 and 60 years.

• The applicant must be a permanent resident of West Bengal.

Application Window: The enrolment process will continue for 90 days from June 1 and applications can be submitted across municipalities and wards through online and offline modes.
