Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, March 8, inaugurated two new corridors of the Delhi Metro and laid the foundation stone for three additional routes in the national capital.
The newly inaugurated corridors are the Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur section of the Pink Line and the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park section of the Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Officials said the metro projects together are worth over ₹18,300 crore and are expected to expand the city’s public transport network and improve connectivity across Delhi.

Pink Line extension and ‘Ring Metro’
A key project inaugurated was the Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur section of the Pink Line. The 12.3 km elevated corridor extends the Pink Line to about 71.56 km and forms what officials describe as India’s first fully operational Ring Metro. The circular alignment is expected to improve connectivity between several parts of the city and make travel between different neighbourhoods easier.
Stations on the corridor include Majlis Park, Burari, Jharoda Majra, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Soorghat, Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar and Maujpur-Babarpur.
The project also includes a bridge across the Yamuna and a double-decker viaduct designed to carry both a metro line and a road flyover.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the expansion would help improve daily travel in the capital. “The metro expansion is expected to make daily commuting smoother, cut traffic congestion and help tackle pollution in the capital,” she said. She added that the new corridors would also strengthen connectivity for residents of the National Capital Region, particularly commuters travelling from Noida and Faridabad to Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Magenta Line section
Modi also inaugurated the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park section of the Magenta Line, which is about 9.9 km long. The corridor is expected to improve connectivity in northern parts of Delhi, covering areas such as Madhuban Chowk, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Bhalaswa and Majlis Park.
Gupta said the project also involved complex engineering work. “These metro corridors are also significant achievements from an engineering perspective. A portion of the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park corridor reaches a height of approximately 28.36 metres, making it one of the highest elevated sections in the Delhi Metro network,” she said.
New metro corridors under Phase V-A
During the programme, the prime minister also laid the foundation stone for three new metro routes under Phase V-A, covering a total route length of around 16.10 km.
The proposed corridors include the Central Vista corridor connecting R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, the Golden Line extension from Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal 1, and the Golden Line extension from Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj.
Officials said these routes are expected to improve connectivity to key areas of the capital and facilitate travel between Noida, south Delhi and the airport.
GPRA redevelopment projects
The PM also visited the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Type-5 quarters at Sarojini Nagar and handed over keys to female allottees.
He inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for GPRA redevelopment projects worth about ₹15,200 crore. The projects cover government housing colonies at Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar and Sriniwaspuri.
Officials said the redevelopment aims to modernise residential facilities for government employees and develop supporting administrative infrastructure.
The project is being implemented through a self-sustaining financial model, under which a limited portion of the land will be monetised for commercial and residential use to finance the redevelopment.
Once completed, the plan is expected to provide more than 9,350 flats for government employees and create around 48 lakh square feet of office space.
