The Central Board of Secondary Education declared the CBSE Class 12 Result 2026, recording an overall pass percentage of 85.20%, down 3.19 percentage points from last year’s 88.39%.
However, beyond the headline numbers, this year’s board examination cycle reflected a much larger story: conflict-linked accommodations for students in West Asia, CBSE’s largest-ever transition to On Screen Marking (OSM), the Board’s new digital evaluation system, widening regional disparities, and rising compartment cases across several northern regions.
CBSE also acknowledged the “prevailing situation in West Asian countries” in its official release, confirming that students affected by disruptions in the region were accommodated within the examination and result declaration process.
Note: Some registration-related figures in the CBSE statistical release appear to show category-wise variations between “overall registered candidates” and “full-subject candidates”. The story will be updated once final clarification is received from the Board.
Pass percentage declines as compartment cases rise
Of the 17,68,968 students who appeared for the examination, 15,07,109 cleared it successfully, while 1,63,800 students were placed in compartment, nearly 35,000 more than last year.

West Asia conflict emerges as major backdrop to CBSE’s global examination cycle
CBSE’s reference to the “prevailing situation in West Asian countries” marks one of the rare occasions where geopolitical instability has directly entered the board examination narrative.
The Board, which operates in 27 countries through its international school network, confirmed that students from affected regions were accommodated within the examination and result declaration process. Candidates whose examinations were disrupted due to the regional situation were also included in the broader results framework.
The development comes amid continuing instability across parts of West Asia, affecting Indian curriculum schools attended largely by expatriate Indian students.
CBSE has one of the world’s largest overseas Indian school networks, with affiliated schools spread across Gulf countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, where lakhs of Indian-origin students study under the Indian curriculum.
Foreign schools recorded a sharper fall in pass percentage compared to the national average, dropping from 95.01% in 2025 to 90.50% in 2026.
Foreign school performance: 2025 vs 2026
| Category | 2025 Pass % | 2026 Pass % | Change |
| Girls | 96.57% | 92.23% | -4.34 |
| Boys | 93.45% | 88.69% | -4.76 |
| Total | 95.01% | 90.50% | -4.51 |
The data reflects how regional instability and educational disruption may have affected overseas CBSE candidates, especially in conflict-sensitive zones linked to the Gulf and neighbouring regions.
CBSE completes largest-ever digital evaluation overhaul
The 2026 board cycle also marked a major structural transformation in India’s examination ecosystem, with CBSE implementing On Screen Marking (OSM) at full scale for Class 12 evaluations. A total of 98,66,622 answer books were digitally evaluated using around 88,000 computers across more than 6,000 evaluation centres.
Under OSM, evaluators assess scanned answer sheets digitally, reducing manual totalling, posting and uploading errors associated with conventional evaluation systems.
CBSE said the transition was completed after nationwide evaluator training and digital integration across centres.
Southern regions dominate, Prayagraj records lowest performance

CBSE 2026 Result: No merit list, merit certificates for top 0.1%
Continuing its policy against unhealthy academic competition, CBSE did not release a merit list or rank holders. However, merit certificates will be issued to the top 0.1% students in each subject through DigiLocker. Digital marksheets, migration certificates and related documents have been made available through CBSE’s DigiLocker repository and official portals including CBSE and DigiLocker.
