PM SVANidhi Launched by MoH&UA Completes Six Years of Operation
In May 2026, the PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi), a micro-credit scheme launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoH&UA) completed 6 years of empowering street vendors.
Key Highlights
Event: To mark this milestone, the Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, MoH&UA and Chief Minister (CM) Manik Saha, Tripura engaged with PM SVANidhi beneficiaries from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
- They also distributed credit cards and loan sanction letters to street vendors from Tripura.
Loans Sanctioned: Over the last 6 years, 1.12 Crore (Cr) loans facilitated more than 1.05 crore collateral-free loans have been sanctioned under the scheme across the country amounting to over Rs 17,800 Cr and benefitting around 75.5 lakh street vendors.
North-Eastern (NE) region: More than 2.59 lakh loans have been distributed in the NE region, through which financial assistance amounting to over Rs 430 Cr has been extended to street vendors.
Overview of President Droupadi Murmu’s Visit to Sikkim from May 26 to 28, 2026
In May 2026, President Droupadi Murmu was on a 3-day official visit to Sikkim from May 26 to 28, 2026, to participate in the state’s Golden Jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of statehood and to inaugurate various developmental and cultural initiatives.

Key Engagements: During her three-day visit to Sikkim, President Droupadi Murmu visited the Orchidarium and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, toured Nathu La at the India–China border, attended the 7th Convocation of Sikkim University at Manan Bhavan, Gangtok, Sikkim.
- She flagged off ‘Pink City Runners’, vehicles for women at Ridge Park in Gangtok.
Sikkim Declared Fully Literate State: Sikkim has been officially declared a fully literate state under the Ministry of Education (MoE)’s flagship initiative Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society (ULLAS), thereby becoming the 5th state (after Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, and Himachal Pradesh, HP) and 3rd North-East(NE) state in India to achieve this feat.
President’s Police Colour: President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious President’s Police Colour to the Sikkim Police at a ceremony held at Palzor Stadium, Gangtok, in recognition of its distinguished service and significant contribution to maintaining peace, security, and public order in the state.
India Signs USD 629 Million BrahMos Missile Export Deal with Vietnam to Strengthen Defence Cooperation
In May 2026, the Government of India (GoI) signed a BrahMos missile export agreement with Vietnam worth approximately Rs 60 billion (USD 629 million), further strengthening bilateral defence and strategic cooperation.
- The development was announced by Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Defence(MoD), at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual security summit organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), held in Singapore.
About BrahMos missile Export Deal:
Contract: The BrahMos export agreement with Vietnam covers the supply of missile systems, along with training and logistical support.
Export Milestone: Vietnam has become the second overseas buyer of the BrahMos missile system, following the Philippines, which became the first foreign customer after signing a USD 375 million deal with India in 2022.
Other Deal :Negotiations between India and Indonesia for the acquisition of the BrahMos missile system are in the final stages, with Indonesia having finalized plans in March 2026 to procure one battery of the missile system for coastal defence.
Union MoS Jitendra Singh Launches AI-Enabled CPGRAMS Voice Chatbot ‘Samadhan Didi’
In May 2026, Union Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions (MoPPG&P), launched the 1st-of-its-kind initiative ‘Samadhan Didi’, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled voice chatbot for the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), at Kartavya Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi.
About Samadhan Didi:
Developed by: The new chatbot was developed by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), MoPP&P in partnership with BHASHa INterface for India (BHASHINI).
Multi-lingual Chatbot: It is a voice-based multilingual chatbot which supports all 22 Indian languages recognised under the 8th Schedule of the Constitution and other regional and indigenous languages (such as: Bhojpuri, Garo, Khasi, Mizo and Bodhi), enabling citizens to register grievances in their preferred language with appropriate authority.
Key Role of Bhasini: The system combines the Bhashini’s language capabilities with grievance-classification models on CPGRAM data, ensuring smooth experience across Indian languages.
Automatic Categorisation: Using the chatbot, citizens can register their complaints/grievances simply by speaking, in their own language, describing the concern in plain words, following the AI understands the issue, asks follow-up questions, and automatically identifies the appropriate Ministry, Department category and sub-category, and files the grievance with correct authority.
Union Minister Manohar Lal Launches ‘Swachh Mobile App’ in West Bengal
In May 2026, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), launched ‘Swacch Application(app)’, geo-tagged mobile app for cleanliness in municipal areas, in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB) in the presence of Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Minister (CM) of WB.
- The launch of the app marks a major step towards citizen participation in urban governance and boosting the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) through technology-enabled solutions.
About Swachh App:
Purpose: The app will enable the citizens to upload photos of issues such as stagnant water, garbage, or drainage problems in their respective municipal areas and send them to the municipality for action.
Implementation: For the initial phase, the app is being launched for 10 municipalities namely, Asansol, Durgapur, Baidyabati, Basirhat, Contai, Nalhati, Krishnanagar, Madhyamgram Tufangunge and Pujali, across the state.
- The state government plans to expand the app later to 120 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of the state.
Categories: The app features over 18 complaint categories i.e. from dead animals and uncleared dustbins to unwashed public toilets.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Secured NSC Approval for SIP for Visakhapatnam ITI Cluster Under PM-SETU
In May 2026, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) along with their academic partner New Age Makers Institute of Technology (NAMTECH) secured the National Steering Committee (NSC) approval for Rs 200.21 crore Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) for the Visakhapatnam Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Cluster in Andhra Pradesh (AP).
- This marks the first-ever SIP approval granted under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme.
Key Details:
3rd NSC Meeting: The approval was granted during the 3rd National Steering Committee Meeting, chaired by Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), at Kaushal Bhawan in New Delhi.
Significance: With this approval, AP becomes the 1st state to onboard an Anchor Industry Partner (AIP) under PM-SETU scheme.
- Also, the proposed Visakhapatnam cluster is expected to serve as a national model to strengthen industry participation in vocational training, foster outcome-oriented governance, and enhance the financial sustainability of Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created under the scheme.
PM-SETU: It is a flagship initiative of MSDE, launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in October 2025, with total budget outlay of Rs 60,000 crore.
- The scheme is designed to transform 1,000 Government ITIs through an industry-led “Hub-and-Spoke” model.

Australia, UK, and USA Launches Underwater Drone Programme to Advance Maritime Defence Capabilities
In June 2026, the three member nations of the AUKUS security alliance, United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK), and Australia , launched a joint underwater drone programme under the ‘AUKUS alliance Pillar Two’ to co-develop advanced Uncrewed Undersea Vehicles (UUVs).
- The announcement was made by Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles, USA Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and UK Defence Secretary John Healey at the US embassy on the sidelines of the IISS Shangri La Dialogue in Singapore.
About Underwater Drone Programme:
Objective: The initiative aims to develop a suite of highly adaptable, multi-mission UUV payloads to support undersea operations and help the AUKUS partners maintain their collective strategic advantage in the maritime domain.
- The first delivery of UUV technology is expected by 2027.
Focus: This project focusing on collaboration in quantum computing, advanced defence technologies such as long-range hypersonic weapons, undersea robotics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
AUKUS: Established in 2021, AUKUS is a trilateral defence partnership between Australia, the UK, and the USA focused on nuclear-powered submarines, advanced military technologies, and underwater drone systems to strengthen maritime security.

In June 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, successfully conducted a high-calibre conventional bomb trial at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Ramgarh Range, Panchkula, Haryana.
Key Details of Trial:
Validation: The high-powered explosive test was conducted in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), under the supervision of senior Indian Air Force (IAF) officials and DRDO scientists, to validate advanced munitions and defence capabilities.
Deployment: This high-calibre bomb was designed to serve as a warhead for IAF missiles and other air-dropped munitions.

IPL 2026: RCB Clinched Their Second IPL Title by Defeating Gujarat Titans
On 31 May 2026, the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, branded as TATA IPL 2026, concluded with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) securing their second IPL title after defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by 5 wickets in the final with 12 balls to spare in the final held at Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
- GT set a target of 156 after being put in to bat, but RCB comfortably chased it down in 18 overs, led by an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls from RCB’s Virat Kohli.
- RCB clinched the title with Rs.20 crore prize money and a trophy while runner-up GT received Rs. 12.5 crore.
About IPL 2026:
Overview: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted IPL 2026 from 28 March to 31 May 2026 as a Twenty20 (T20) franchise league featuring 74 matches across 13 venues in India.
Virat Kohli: Indian Cricketer representing RCB, became the first player to complete 9,000 IPL runs, the first batter to cross 4,000 runs in run chases, the first IPL batter to score 800 boundaries (807 fours and 303 sixes), and the first to register four successive 600-plus run seasons.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: Indian Cricketer representing RR, had a record-breaking IPL 2026 season, becoming the youngest player in T20 cricket history to aggregate 1,000 runs at just 15 years and 29 days, setting a new record for the most sixes by an Indian batter in a single IPL season (43), becoming the fastest player to reach 400 runs in an IPL season by balls faced (167 deliveries) and the youngest batter in IPL to win Orange Cap (Most Runs).

Veteran Singer and Padma Bhushan Awardee Suman Kalyanpur Passed Away
In May 2026, veteran Indian playback singer and Padma Bhushan awardee Suman Kalyanpur passed away at the age of 89 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She was born as Suman Hemmady, on January 28, 1937 in Dhaka, Bengal Presidency, British India (present-day Dhaka, Bangladesh).
- In January 2023, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s 3rd highest civilian honor, by the Government of India (GoI) in the field of ‘Arts’, recognising her significant contributions to Indian music.
About Suman Kalyanpur:
Musical Legacy: Suman Kalyanpur was one of India’s most celebrated playback singers, renowned for her melodious voice and immense contribution to Hindi, Marathi, and several regional film industries.
Career: She began her playback singing career in 1954 with films such as Shukrachi Chandini and Mangu. She rose to prominence during the 1950s and 1960s, gaining widespread recognition for her soulful songs and memorable duets with legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi.
Contribution to Indian Music: Over a career spanning more than six decades, she recorded thousands of songs and collaborated with many of Indian cinema’s most renowned composers and singers, leaving a lasting impact on Indian music.
Notable Work: During her illustrious musical career spanning over 60 years, some of her notable works include: “Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche”, “Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhin Se”, “Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye” and others.
Other Genres of Music: Other than film music, she was also known for her devotional songs, ghazals and thumris.

Hindi Journalism Day 2026 – May 30
Hindi Journalism Day (Hindi Patrakarita Diwas) is observed annually in India on May 30 to commemorate the publication of Udant Martand (meaning “The Rising Sun”) in 1826, the first Hindi-language newspaper, which broke the dominance of English and Persian media in the early 19th century.
- May 30, 2026 commemorates the 200th anniversary (Bicentenary) of Hindi print media.
Background:
Establishment: Udant Martand was published weekly every Tuesday from Martand Press, Kolhu Tola Lane, colonial Calcutta (now Kolkata), carrying the historic motto ‘Hindustaniyon ke hit ke het’ (For the benefit of Indians).
Pioneer: It was founded, edited, and published by Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla, a lawyer and scholar from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
Struggle: Due to high postal rates under British rule and lack of support, Udant Martand closed after about 18 months, but it marked the beginning of the Vernacular Press Act of 1878 in India.
2026 Event: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of Communications, released a Rs.5 commemorative postage stamp and a special bicentenary volume detailing the rich evolution of the language press of India in New Delhi, Delhi.
World No Tobacco Day 2026 – May 31
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is annually observed across the globe on May 31 to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and promote policies aimed at reducing tobacco consumption worldwide.
- 2026 Theme: “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction”
Background:
Establishment: The Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) established WNTD in 1987 to raise awareness about preventable diseases and deaths caused by tobacco.
