Overview of Belgium PM Bart De Wever’s  Visit to India from September 2 to 4, 2026 
Bart De Wever, Prime Minister (PM) of Belgium, undertook a three-day official state visit to India from September 2 to 4, 2026, at the invitation of Narendra Modi, Prime Minister (PM) of India, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across trade, investment, defence, technology, and connectivity.

• This marked Belgian PM Wever’s 1st ever official visit to India since assuming office in February 2025.

Highlights of the Visit:
Delegation-level Talks: PM Narendra Modi held a high-level delegation meeting with Belgian PM Bart De Wever, at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, reviewing bilateral ties with a focus on trade, investment, clean energy, critical minerals, technology and connectivity.
Defence CEOs Roundtable: Union Minister of State (MoS) Sanjay Seth, Ministry of Defence (MoD), along with his Belgian counterpart Theo Francken, attended the India-Belgium Defence Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) Roundtable and Business-2-Business (B2B) meeting held in New Delhi.

• The event witnessed the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to use Belgian technological expertise and India’s industrial capabilities and manufacturing scale.

Dialogue: On 4 September 2026, PM Bart De Wever visited Mumbai, Maharashtra, and participated in the India-Belgium High-Level Dialogue on the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (India-EU FTA), focusing on trade, ports, logistics and investment.
Outcomes:

• 3Ts: Belgian PM De Wever visit to India resulted in 10 key announcements,  focused mainly on 3Ts: Trade, Technology and Talent.
• Key MoUs: Both countries signed 5 key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas like: define cooperation, renewable energy (RE), security, diplomatic ties.

VP C.P. Radhakrishnan released Postage Stamp Marking 75 Years of Dinamalar in Chennai
In September 2026, the Vice President (VP) of India C.P. Radhakrishnan released a commemorative postage stamp marking the 75th year of publication of Dinamalar, a Tamil daily newspaper, at a function held at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai, Tamil Nadu(TN)

• The commemorative stamp celebrates Dinamalar’s 75-year journey and its contribution to journalism and public service..

Highlights of the Event: 
Dignitaries:  The event was attended by Major Manoj, Chennai Regional Director of the Department of Posts(DoP); Dr. R. Ramasubbu, Editor of the Dinamalar Group; publishers L. Aadhimoolam, Dr. L. Ramasubbu and Jayashree; and other dignitaries.
Legacy: Established in 1951 by T.V. Ramasubbaiyer in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Dinamalar has grown into a major Tamil media organisation. The VP highlighted the newspaper’s commitment to truth, patriotism and public service during its 75-year journey.
Pattam: The VP also appreciated Dinamalar’s ‘Pattam’ publication for providing school students with information on general awareness, language skills and scientific innovations.
Others: During his Chennai visit, VP C.P. Radhakrishnan launched the India Valve Registry at India Valves 2026, a collaborative initiative collecting secure, de-identified real-world data on transcatheter valve interventions across India to support research and evidence-based cardiac care.

Munitions India-Drogo Aerospace Sign MoU to Develop Indigenous UAVs and Loitering Munitions
In September 2026, Munitions India Limited (MIL), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Drogo Aerospace Private Limited to collaborate on the design, development and integration of indigenous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and loitering munition systems

• The MoU was signed by Yashwanth Bonthu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Drogo Aerospace, and Kumar Vaibhav Gaur, Executive Director (ED), MIL in Pune, Maharashtra.

About MIL–Drogo Aerospace MoU:
Key Role: Under the partnership, Drogo Aerospace will design and manufacture UAV platforms and payload hardware, while MIL will contribute expertise in munitions design, explosives, fuzing and warhead technologies.
Joint Development: The two organisations will collaborate on UAV-munition integration, safety evaluation, field trials and quality certification. MIL also manufactures ammunition, explosives, rockets and bombs for the armed forces and other customers.
Delta Wing Kamikaze UAV: A key focus of the collaboration is Drogo Aerospace’s Delta Wing Kamikaze UAV/loitering munition which was successfully tested in Hyderabad, Telangana and is designed for one-way precision strikes, with a proposed range of around 1,000 km (kilometres) and a 20–30 kg (kilograms) warhead capacity.
UAV & Loitering Munition: A UAV operates without an onboard pilot for surveillance, reconnaissance or strike missions, while a loitering munition can remain airborne before identifying and striking a target.

IIT-M’s Bodhan AI Launches 4 Multilingual AI Models to Build India’s Education Stack 
In September 2026, Bodhan AI (Artificial Intelligence), a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in AI for Education at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM),Chennai(Tamil Nadu, TN), launched 4 foundational multilingual AI models as Digital Public Goods in partnership with AI4Bharat to strengthen India’s education ecosystem through sovereign digital infrastructure.
About Multilingual AI Models:
Coverage: The initiative includes four AI models: speech recognition, Text-To-Speech (TTS), Machine Translation (MT), and Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
Language Support: Speech recognition supports 27 languages; OCR and text-to-speech support 23 languages each; translation supports 22 languages.
Technology: Built using NVIDIA (NVIDIA Corporation) Nemotron and NVIDIA Neural Module (NeMo) framework, including Nemotron 3.5 Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) post-training to support Indian dialects and accents.
Infrastructure: Released as open-weight models with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) on sovereign infrastructure, the initiative is part of the Bharat Education Artificial Intelligence (EduAI) Stack to develop digital public infrastructure for education.
Education Tools: Includes a Student Tutor Bot (for Classes 6–12, multilingual and interactive learning) and a Teacher Assistant Bot (for lesson planning, assignments, evaluation, and content generation with teacher oversight).

UNGA Adopts Resolution to Observe November 27 as International Day Against Child Marriage
In September 2026, India was among the 70 countries who co-sponsored a resolution in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declaring November 27 every year as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.

• The resolution, A/RES/80/309, led by Sierra Leone, was adopted without a vote during the 80th Session of the UNGA in New York, United States of America (USA), with the support of all 193 UN Member States.

About the Resolution:
Supporters: The idea  for a global day to raise awareness against the child, early and forced marriage worldwide was championed by Fatima Maada Bion, First Lady of Sierra Leone and President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and Bhuwan Ribhu, founder of Just Rights for Children (JRC), a global child rights network committed to ending all forms of child exploitations.
Significance: The resolution would call upon governments all around the world to take decisive action through comprehensive laws, budgeted national action plans or policies, responsible and accountable institutions , among other steps to spread awareness about the consequences of child marriages.

• As per the resolution, the member states are required to develop and implement holistic multisectoral national strategies and action plans to end child, early and force marriage.

First Observance: The first observance of the International Day will take place on 27 November 2026. The UN has added the day to its official list of international observances.

BANKING & FINANCE

Reserve Bank of India Releases Financial Stability Report 2026 
In June 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the Financial Stability Report (FSR) -June 2026, a half-yearly publication that presents the collective assessment of the Sub-Committee  of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) on the current and emerging risks to the stability of the Indian Financial System.
Key Findings:
Growth: The Indian economy recorded a strong growth of 7.7% in 2025-26, supported by strong private consumption and fixed investment.
Inflation: The MPC revised its inflation projection upwards from 4.6% to 5.1% for 2026-27.
Foreign Exchange Reserves: India’s foreign exchange reserves stood at USD 672.6 billion (Bn) as on June 19, 2026, covering more than 10 months of merchandise imports and 90.6% of outstanding external debt.

WhatsApp Launches Native Bill Payments Feature in India via Bharat Connect Network
In September 2026, WhatsApp, owned by Meta, introduced its native Bill Payments feature in India, powered by the Bharat Connect network (formerly Bharat Bill Payment System,BBPS) operated by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India)Bharat BillPay Limited (NBBL), enabling users to conveniently discover, manage, and pay household and utility bills directly within the application(app).
About WhatsApp Bill Payments:
Coverage: Users can pay bills for electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments, with access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories through the Bharat Connect network.
Payment Options: Bill payments can be completed using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit cards or credit cards.
Features: It provides a one-stop bill payment platform that allows users to search and manage multiple billers, view and pay current bills, manage recurring payments, access payment history, and track upcoming bills without switching applications.
About Meta Platforms, Inc. (Meta): Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and headquartered in California, United States of America (USA), Meta is a technology company that operates major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

Bisleri International Partners with SBI for Plastic Waste Management Initiative 
In September 2026, Bisleri International Private Limited partnered with State Bank of India (SBI) by signing a Letter of Association (LoA) to promote responsible plastic waste management under the ‘Bottles for Change’ initiative.

Dominican Republic’s Joheirry Mola Crowned Miss World 2026 in Vietnam
In September 2026, the Miss World Organisation (MWO) crowned Joheirry Mola of the Dominican Republic as Miss World 2026 at the 73rd edition held in Nha Trang, Vietnam, where 111 contestants competed globally.

• She became only the second Dominican woman to win Miss World, following Mariasela Álvarez, who won the title in 1982.

Crowning: Miss World 2025 Opal Suchata Chuangsri of Thailand crowned Joheirry Mola of the Dominican Republic as Miss World 2026.
Runner –ups: Spain’s Elisabeth Reynes Alabern was named first runner-up, while Malaysia’s Taanusiya Chetty finished as second runner-up.

• India’s Nikita Porwal, from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh (MP), secured a place in the Top 40.

Dinesh Sharma Appointed as Lt Gov of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
In September 2026, President Droupadi Murmu appointed Dr. Dinesh Sharma, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from Uttar Pradesh (UP) as the Lieutenant Governor (Lt Gov) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (A&N) with the announcement issued through a communiqué by Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, Delhi.

• He succeeds Admiral (Retired) Devendra Kumar Joshi, former Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), who served as Lt Gov of A&N since 2017.
• The appointment will come into effect from the date he assumes charge of the office.

Legislative Role: He served as a Rajya Sabha MP from UP since 2023, which was scheduled to end on 25 November 2026 and was also a member of the Panel of Vice-Chairpersons of the Rajya Sabha.

MoL&J Appoints 8 High Court Judges as Chief Justices across India
In September 2026, the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) notified the appointments of 8 Judges of various High Courts (HC) as Chief Justices (CJ) of different High courts across India.

Process: The Supreme Court Collegium recommends names, followed by approval from the President Droupadi Murmu and formal notification by MoL&J, ensuring institutional checks and balances.

LIC gets RBI approval to acquire up to 9.99% stake in ICICI Bank 
In September 2026, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India’s largest state-owned life insurer, secured the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approval to acquire an aggregate holding of up to 9.99% of the paid-up share capital or voting rights in ICICI Bank Limited, private lender.

• As per RBI, the approval is further subject to certain conditions, including compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory provisions.

Key Details of Acquisition:
Deadline: If LIC does not acquire the approved stake within a time period of one year from the date of the letter dated September 04, 2026, then the central bank’s approval will stand cancelled.
Shareholding in ICICI Bank: As of 1st Quarter (Q1: April to June) of Financial Year 2026-27 (FY27), Mutual Funds (MFs) owned 29.60% stake in ICICI Bank, while the insurance companies held 8.24%, of which LIC owned 4.35% stake in the private lender.

German’s Isar Aerospace Launches ‘Spectrum Rocket’ into Space
In September 2026, the German startup Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Andøya Spaceport in Norway under its second-flight mission, ‘Onward and Upward’.
About Spectrum Rocket Mission:
Historic Flight: The Spectrum rocket crossed an altitude of 100 kilometres (km) in less than four minutes and became the first privately developed rocket to reach space from Europe.
Spectrum Rocket: It is a two-stage orbital launch vehicle designed and largely manufactured in-house by Isar Aerospace for launching small and medium-sized satellites and constellations.

• The rocket is 28 metres tall, has a 2-metre(m) diameter, uses 10 engines, and can carry payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms (kg) to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Payloads: The mission carried five CubeSats: CyBEEsat from Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), Germany; TriSat-S from the University of Maribor, Slovenia; Platform 6 from EnduroSat, Bulgaria; FramSat-1 from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway; and SpaceTeamSat1 from TU Wien Space Team, Austria.

• It also carried the non-separable ‘Let It Go’ experiment developed by Dcubed, with payload selection supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) Boost! Programme and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Microlauncher Competition.

Apollyon Dynamics’ Ahuti Mk II Becomes India’s Fastest Multirotor UAV 
In September 2026, Apollyon Dynamics, a defence startup, set a national record after its electric interceptor drone Ahuti Mk II achieved a top speed of 498 kilometres per hour (km/h), becoming India’s fastest multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
About Ahuti Mk II :
Performance: Ahuti Mk II achieved a certified top speed surpassing the previous ~325 km/h benchmark, with the Mk II rebuilt from the 2025 version (300 km/h) to deliver nearly a 66% speed increase within one year.
Technology: Developed as a high-speed interceptor drone to chase and neutralise hostile drones and loitering munitions, it underwent nearly 10 design iterations in frame, propulsion, and motor configuration, and uses a 400-ampere burst current for high-speed performance.
Deployment: The drone has been tested at Indian Army (IA) ranges with support from defence authorities.

BSI Discovers New Plant Species “Osbeckia ulotricha” in Kerala-Tamil Nadu Region 
In September 2026, a group of scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) discovered a new plant species named  “Osbeckia ulotricha”, in the shola grasslands of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve (BR) located in the Western Ghats across Kerala and Tamil Nadu (TN).

• The discovery of new plant species was published in Lilloa, an international botanical journal.

About  Osbeckia ulotricha:
Key Features: Osbeckia ulotricha, a woolly-haired species, is different from other previously discovered Osbeckia yercaudensis and Osbeckia wightiana, due to its unique morphological characteristics like: leaves clustered at the apex, ovary crowned with true bristles.
Habitat: It mainly grows in the damp margins of Tropical Montane Wet Temperate Forest (shola) and Montane Temperate Grassland ecosystems, at elevations of about 1,200 to 1,500 metres (m).
Family: The newly discovered flowering plant species belongs to the Melastomataceae family and has blossoms between the months of February and May.
About BSI: Established in 1890, BSI, India’s premier government research organisation works under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for studying and protecting the country’s plant life, with its headquarters in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB).

Andrea Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian Grand Prix 2026 at Monza
On 6 September 2026, Italy’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes won the 77th edition of the Italian Grand Prix (GP) (also known as Formula One F1 Pirelli Gran Premio d’Italia 2026) at Monza Circuit, Italy, marking the thirteenth round of the 2026 F1 World Championship.

• He finished 3.8 seconds ahead of George Russell (United Kingdom, UK) of Mercedes after overtaking him with Four laps remaining, and becoming the first Italian to win at home in 60 years since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.

Highlights of Italian Grand Prix 2026:
Ranking: Max Verstappen (Netherlands) of Red Bull Racing secured third place, followed by Lando Norris (UK) of McLaren and Oscar Piastri (Australia) of McLaren, who completed the top five positions in the race standings.
Performance: Kimi Antonelli started 19th due to grid penalties but executed a strategic and aggressive race, overtaking multiple competitors and securing victory after passing teammate George Russell in final laps.

OBITUARY

Influential Carnatic Musician S. R. Janakiraman Passed Away at 98 
In September 2026, renowned Carnatic vocalist and musicologist S. R. Janakiraman passed away at the age of 98 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN) marking the end of an era in Indian classical music. He was born on 12 July 1928 in Lalgudi, TN.

• He received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2011 in the field of Art.

About S. R. Janakiraman:
Profile:  He was popularly known as S.R.J was a distinguished exponent of Carnatic music, celebrated for his contributions as a vocalist, musicologist, and educator.
Career: Began learning music in 1938 and trained at Kalakshetra under eminent gurus like Tiger Varadachari and Musiri Subramania Iyer.
Contribution: Known for his deep knowledge of Carnatic music and for delivering lecture-demonstrations that simplified complex musical concepts.

• His sessions were a key feature of Chennai’s December Music Festival, shaping its intellectual and cultural landscape.

Legacy: Contributed extensively to musicology through books, research, and audio-visual works, with his legacy continuing through writings, recordings, and disciples.

International Vulture Day 2026 – September 5
International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) is observed annually across the globe on the first Saturday of September to raise awareness about vulture conservation, emphasizing their vital ecological role and the challenges they face.

• IVAD 2026 was observed on 5 September 2026.

Background:
Origin: IVAD emerged in 2006 through collaboration between the Birds of Prey Programme of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust (HCT) in England, United Kingdom (UK).
Expansion: The initiative soon transcended borders to become a global event involving hundreds of organisers and thousands of participants.
