Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held bilateral talks with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney here at the Hyderabad House focusing on strengthening cooperation and partnership between the two countries, reports ANI.
During the discussion, both leaders reviewed the progress achieved across diverse areas of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership.
The Canadian Prime Minister arrived in India on February 27 for an official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks Carney’s first official visit to the country, which began when he arrived in Mumbai. He will depart from India today following his engagements in the national capital.
PM Carney, who arrived in the national capital on Sunday, is expected to sign a 10-year, $2 billion uranium supply agreement along with smaller pacts covering oil and gas, environment, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, education and culture, according to Livemint.
“There’s a rapidly growing demand across India for more energy, technology, and services — exactly what Canada has to offer. We’re here to make sure our workers and businesses can seize these opportunities,” Carney wrote on X ahead of the meeting.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar earlier in the day called on the Canadian PM as part of his official visit to the country and appreciated his commitment towards charting a forward looking partnership.“Delighted to call on Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada in New Delhi this morning. Appreciate his commitment towards charting a forward looking partnership,” he tweeted on X.
Talks at Hyderabad House
They are expected to review progress under the India–Canada Strategic Partnership, building on their earlier meetings in Kananaskis (June 2025) and Johannesburg (November 2025). The two also interacted previously on the sidelines of the G7 summit in June 2025.
The meeting comes as Carney seeks to expand trade and offset strains in Canada’s economic relations with the United States.
India, for its part, is looking to attract greater overseas investment. Canadian pension and wealth funds have already invested about $73 billion in India, according to reports.
Diplomatic reset
During his stop in Mumbai, PM Carney met Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran to discuss cooperation in areas such as technology and AI.
“Canada and India are both growing economies with big ambitions in energy, technology, and AI,” PM Carney said on X, adding that partnerships in these sectors could enhance security and prosperity for both nations.
Chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani and his wife Nita Ambani hosted the Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney and Diana Fox Carney at their home in Mumbai as part of his official India tour.
