Walk into any teachers’ WhatsApp group in India right now, and you’ll find someone sharing an AI prompt for lesson planning. It’s become the go-to productivity hack of the past year — type in a topic and grade level, and ChatGPT or Claude hands back a structured lesson plan in under a minute. For a profession that has long complained about being buried in paperwork, this feels like a genuine win.
And it is, to a point. But the enthusiasm around AI lesson planning has quietly skipped over a bigger question: what happens to that plan once it leaves the screen?
The Planning Stage Was Never the Real Bottleneck
Ask any teacher where their time actually goes during a school week, and lesson planning is rarely at the top of the list. It’s real work, certainly — but it competes with far more time-consuming tasks: taking attendance across multiple sections, correcting papers, updating progress records, responding to parent queries, and managing the dozens of small administrative tasks that don’t show up in any curriculum document.
AI tools are genuinely useful at compressing the planning stage — turning a blank page into a structured first draft in a fraction of the time it used to take. That’s a real efficiency gain. But it’s solving the smaller half of a much larger time problem, and treating it as the whole solution risks distracting from where the actual hours are being lost.
A Lesson Plan Is Not the Same as a Taught, Tracked, and Reported Lesson
Consider the full lifecycle of a single lesson: it has to be planned, delivered, assessed, graded, recorded, and eventually communicated to parents in some form — a report card, a message, a parent-teacher conversation. AI can meaningfully assist with exactly one of those six steps. The other five remain almost entirely manual in most Indian schools and coaching institutes today, regardless of how sophisticated the lesson plan itself was.
This matters because efficiency gains that don’t touch the full workflow tend to just shift bottlenecks rather than remove them. A teacher who can now generate five lesson plans in the time it used to take to write one still has to manually grade five sets of papers, track five sets of attendance, and follow up with five sets of parents. The time saved at the front end doesn’t necessarily translate into less total workload — it just moves the pressure point downstream
What a More Complete Picture of “AI-assisted Teaching” Should Include
If the goal is genuinely reducing teacher workload — not just making one visible task faster — the conversation needs to expand well past prompt engineering. A few things worth more attention in edtech discourse:
- Assessment and grading, particularly for objective/MCQ-style tests, is one of the most time-consuming and most automatable parts of a teacher’s week, yet it gets far less attention than lesson-plan prompts in most “AI for teachers” content.
- Attendance and record-keeping remain largely manual across a huge share of Indian institutes, despite being one of the simplest processes to digitize.
- Parent communication is often treated as an afterthought, even though inconsistent updates are frequently the single biggest source of parent dissatisfaction with schools and coaching centres.
None of these are particularly novel problems — institutes have been trying to solve them for years, with varying degrees of success. But they deserve at least as much attention in the current AI-in-education conversation as prompt libraries do, because they represent a much larger share of where a teacher’s actual time goes.
A More Honest Framing
AI lesson planning tools are a genuinely useful development, and there’s no reason to be dismissive of them. But it’s worth being precise about what they actually solve: they compress one relatively small part of a teacher’s week, while leaving the larger, more time-consuming parts of the job — grading, tracking, reporting, communicating — largely untouched
The institutes that will see the biggest gains from AI and digital tools over the next few years likely won’t be the ones that adopted the flashiest lesson-planning prompt library first. They’ll be the ones that looked at the entire workflow — from planning through to parent communication — and found ways to reduce friction at every step, not just the one that happens to be easiest to demo.
