On 15 August 2026, the Government of India (GoI) celebrated the 80th Independence Day (I-Day), led by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi at the Red Fort in New Delhi(Delhi), with participation of 5,000 guests and nationwide events.
- The celebrations commemorate 150 years of the national song “Vande Mataram” and highlight ‘Yuva Shakti’, emphasizing the role and energy of India’s youth in contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
Highlights of 80th Independence Day of India:
Ceremony: PM Narendra Modi, hoisted the National Flag, received a Guard of Honour, and addressed the nation at the Red Fort in New Delhi, accompanied by a 21-Gun Salute and an aerial display by Mi-17 helicopters.
Rally: The New Delhi Zone of the Delhi Police organized a Tiranga Rally under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga, Ghar-Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.
Security: The Border Security Force (BSF) launched ‘Operation Alert’ along the entire western border from August 10–17 to prevent any untoward incidents.
Awards: On the occasion of Independence Day 2026, a total of 1,057 personnel from Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence, and Correctional Services were awarded Gallantry and Service Medals, including 92 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 664 Medals for Meritorious Service.
CCI Hosts BRICS Competition Authorities Meeting in Udaipur, Rajasthan
In August 2026, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026, hosted the Meeting of Heads of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India and China) Competition Authorities in Udaipur, Rajasthan, to strengthen cooperation on fair competition and emerging competition law and policy challenges.
- During the meeting, the CCI presented a collaborative BRICS study titled “Emerging Competition Landscape in the Renewable Energy Sector in BRICS”; and the adoption of a Joint Statement of Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities titled “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in RE Markets”.

BRICS Education Ministers’ Meeting: India hosted the 13th BRICS Education Ministers’ Meeting and 3rd BRICS Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) under the chairmanship of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of Education (MoE), in Bhubaneswar, Odisha (5–7 August 2026), with the adoption of the 13th BRICS Education Ministers’ Declaration outlining five priority areas under the BRICS Education Track.
BRICS WAVES Bazaar: In August 2026, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), through the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), hosted BRICS WAVES Bazaar 2026 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, from 6–7 August 2026, featuring the India–Russia co-production ‘KOROVA’, launch of the BRICS Independent Producers Alliance (BIPA), and several agreements.
BRICS Trade Ministers’ Meeting: Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), chaired the 16th BRICS Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Jaipur, Rajasthan, from 6–7 August 2026, where members unanimously adopted the Jaipur Consensus to study a BRICS Invoice Discounting Mechanism for improving trade-finance access for small businesses.
NITI Aayog Releases Report on India’s Manufacturing Sector, Identifies Four Key Sectors for Global Manufacturing Ambition
In August 2026, Ashok Kumar Lahiri, Vice Chairperson of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), released the report titled “Key Sectors to Position India as a Global Manufacturing Hub”, providing a data-driven assessment of India’s manufacturing sector.
- The report has identified 12 manufacturing sectors(automobiles, electronics, steel, capital goods, defence and drones, chemicals, solar PV, textiles, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, telecom equipment, leather and footwear and food processing) to accelerate India’s journey towards global manufacturing hub and the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Key Findings of the Report:
Aim: To identify sectors where targeted interventions can enhance competitiveness, boost domestic capabilities, increase value addition, reduce import dependence and drive export-oriented manufacturing.
Methodology: The study followed a four-phase approach: sector shortlisting based on market size and growth prospects; assessment of market potential, competitiveness and strategic relevance; benchmarking of best practices from leading manufacturing countries; and development of sector-specific recommendations and an actionable roadmap.
4 High-potential Sectors: Out of the 12 key sectors, the report has identified chemicals, textiles, telecom and networking equipment, and Solar PV manufacturing as four high-potential sectors that have the potential to drive India’s manufacturing growth and strengthen its position in global value chains.
IN-Space Approved India‘s First Fully Commercial Earth Observation Sat Constellation
In August 2026, Union Minister of State (MoS) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Department of Space (DoS), informed the Lok Sabha (House of Peoples) that Indian Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), DoS, has approved and signed an agreement for the country’s first indigenous, fully commercial Earth Observation (EO) constellation under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model with a private consortium named Allied Orbits Private Limited.
- The PPP framework enables Non-Government Entities (NGEs) to develop and operate Earth Observation (EO) constellations, strengthening India’s space capabilities and self-reliant ecosystem.
Key Details of the Agreement:
Leading Entity: The consortium, Allied Orbits Private Limited Consortium is led by PixxelSpace India Private Limited, along with Dhruva Space Private Limited, PierSight Space Private Limited and Satsure Analytics India Pvt. Ltd.
About Constellation: The designated consortium will design, build, own and operate a 12-satellite constellation having features such as: panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capabilities, supported by indigenous ground infrastructure.
Investment & Timeline: As per the agreement, the consortium will invest over Rs 1,200 crore for setting up the constellation, which is expected to be developed and operationalised by 2029.
L&T to Set Up India’s Largest Nvidia B300 AI Factory in Chennai for Together AI
In August 2026, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), through its Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure arm LTN Compute and data centre business Vyoma.AI, secured a Rs 10,000–15,000 crore order to build India’s largest single-cluster NVIDIA B300 AI factory at its Chennai data centre campus, Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN), for United States of America (USA)-based Together AI (Together Computer, Inc.)
- The facility will deploy 10,000 NVIDIA B300 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to power large-scale Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads including training, inference, and fine-tuning on Together AI’s cloud platform.
About NVIDIA B300 AI Factory Project:
Infrastructure: The project integrates hyperscale data centres, advanced computing, high-performance networking, ultra-low-latency interconnects, and parallel storage, and will be hosted at Vyoma.AI’s Chennai gigawatt-scale campus designed for future expansion.
Scale: Phase 1 is planned with 250 Megawatts (MW) capacity and 150 Mega Volt-Amperes (MVA) readiness, ensuring reliable and scalable energy for high-density AI operations.
Expansion: The facility will enable efficient, cost-effective model deployment on Together AI’s platform while expanding Vyoma.AI’s offerings such as GPU-as-a-Service, sovereign cloud, and managed AI services, supporting India’s ambition as a global AI infrastructure hub.
About Vyoma.AI: Founded in 2024 as L&T Cloudfiniti, it is the dedicated digital infrastructure and AI subsidiary of L&T, with Prashant Chiranjive Jain serving as its Managing Director (MD), and headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
BHEL, Norway’s Hystar AS Tie-up for PEM Electrolyser Manufacturing in India
In August 2026, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Norway-based Hystar AS entered into a strategic collaboration for phased indigenisation and local manufacturing of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser systems for green hydrogen projects in India.
- The pact was signed by Y. Srinivas Rao, Executive Director (Heavy Power Equipment Plant, Hyderabad, Telangana), and Sutripto De, General Manager & Head (New & Renewable Energy Business),BHEL, and Fredrik Mowill, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) (Hystar), Hystar AS Norway, in New Delhi, Delhi.
Key Details of Collaboration:
Technology: The collaboration enables BHEL to offer both PEM and alkaline electrolyser solutions, complementing its earlier tie-up with thyssenkrupp nucera India Private Limited for alkaline electrolyser systems.
Strategic Importance: The collaboration combines Hystar’s high-efficiency PEM technology with BHEL’s engineering, manufacturing and project execution expertise to support India’s emerging green hydrogen ecosystem.
Green Hydrogen Support: The partnership will enhance BHEL’s contribution to the National Green Hydrogen Mission(NGHM) and Make in India initiative by promoting clean energy technology and indigenous manufacturing.

NCLT Launched e-Inspection and e-Certified Copy Services To Enhance Access to Judicial Records
In August 2026, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) launched its electronic (e)-Inspection and e-Certified Copy Services, to provide faster digital access to judicial records under the e-Courts (electronic court) 2.0 initiative in New Delhi, Delhi, improving transparency and efficiency.
- These new digital legal services were inaugurated virtually by Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal, President of the NCLT.
About the Services:
Services: The system enables online inspection of case records and digital issuance of certified copies through the NCLT e-Filing portal, allowing registered users to submit requests and access approved documents digitally, ensuring faster and more convenient access for stakeholders.
Digitalisation: The services are part of the NCLT’s broader digital transformation programme, including a revamped website to strengthen digital infrastructure and enhance user experience.
Efficiency: A data-driven mechanism monitors pendency, enables workload redistribution and Special Benches, and incorporates improved case registration and listing guidelines, reducing delays, minimising physical visits, and ensuring a transparent, trackable system.

India–Nepal Sign MoUs for Eight Development Projects Worth NPR 803 Million
In August 2026, India and Nepal signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for the implementation of 8 High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal with a combined estimated cost of NPR 803 million. The projects will be supported through grant assistance from the Government of India(GoI) and will focus on education, health and agriculture sectors.
- The MoUs were signed between the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration, Nepal, and respective project implementing agencies of Nepal.
Highlights of India – Nepal MoU:
Development Partnership: The eight projects will be implemented under India’s HICDPs framework through Indian grant assistance, focusing on grassroots-level development based on Nepal’s local priorities.
Project Coverage: The initiatives will be executed across 7 districts in four provinces of Nepal through local government bodies and institutions, covering health, education, agriculture and digital transformation.
Major Projects: The projects include digitalisation of B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), construction of 10-bed and 15-bed hospitals, Belbari Multiple Campus building, and agriculture facilities such as production centres, livestock centres, agriculture promotion and cold storage units.

SEBI Proposes Mandatory Colour-Coded Credit Risk-o-Meter for Debt Securities
In August 2026, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) released a consultation paper proposing a mandatory, colour-coded Credit Risk-o-Meter for debt securities to make credit risk easier for investors to assess and compare.
- The proposal builds on SEBI’s existing Risk-o-Meter framework for Mutual Funds(MFs), which classifies risk into six levels from Low to Very High.
Proposed Levels:
Levels: The current credit rating system, which ranges from AAA to D, would be mapped into six visual danger levels by the suggested meter.
Colour Coded: The proposal seeks to translate existing alphanumeric credit ratings such as AAA, AA+ and BBB- into a standardised, colour-coded visual scale.
Six levels: Under the proposed framework, the Credit Risk-o-Meter will map credit ratings into six risk levels:
- Lowest credit risk
- Very low credit risk
- Low credit risk
- Moderate credit risk
- Moderate risk of default
- High to very high risk of default
IFSCA Grants Investment Banking License to Nexent Capital in GIFT City
In August 2026, the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) granted an Investment Banking license to Nexent Capital IFSC Private Limited (Nexent Capital), to operate from the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
- The registration was granted under the IFSCA (Capital Market Intermediaries) Regulations, 2025, enabling Nexent Capital to undertake regulated investment banking activities from GIFT City.
Key Details of IFSCA Registration:
Authorised Activities: Nexent Capital is authorised to undertake Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), Follow-on Public Offerings (FPOs), Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) listings, secondary listings, Depository Receipt issuances, Debt Capital Market transactions, and other capital market advisory services.
Significance: The registration will enable Nexent Capital to provide investment banking solutions through the IFSC ecosystem and support international companies in accessing global capital markets through GIFT City.
Services: It will provide end-to-end advisory services covering transaction structuring, listing readiness, capital raising support, execution services, and post-listing capital market support.
IFSCA: It was established on 27 April 2020 under the IFSCA Act, 2019. It serves as India’s unified regulator for International Financial Services Centres (IFSCs) and is headquartered at GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

JSW Neo Energy–DGPC Pact for 920 MW Punatsangchhu-III Hydro Project
In August 2026, JSW Neo Energy Limited (JSWNEL), a subsidiary of JSW Energy, and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) have signed an agreement to jointly develop the 920 megawatt(MW) Punatsangchhu-III Hydroelectric Project, on the Punatsangchhu River in Wangdue Phodrang District, Bhutan.
About Punatsangchhu-III Hydroelectric Project:
Joint Venture: The project will be developed through a Special Purpose Joint Venture (JV) company on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis, with DGPC holding 51% stake and JSW Neo Energy holding 49% stake.
- This marks JSW Neo Energy’s first power generation venture outside India.
Project Development: JSW Neo Energy will make an initial investment of BTN 245 million, while the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared jointly by both companies.
Energy Cooperation: The initiative strengthens India–Bhutan energy cooperation through renewable power development.
JSW Energy: Established in 1994 and headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, it is India’s largest private hydropower generator.

Kirti Chakra Awardee Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan Passed Away
On 13 August 2026, Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan (Retd), Kirti Chakra and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) awardee, and the Indian Army’s (IA) first wheelchair-borne General, passed away at an age of 70 in New Delhi, Delhi.
- He was born on 8 October 1954 in Happy Valley, in present-day Shillong, Meghalaya.
About Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan:
Profile: He was a decorated Indian Army(IA) officer and known for his distinguished military service and resilience.
Operation: A member of the 7th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) (7 PARA SF), then Lieutenant Colonel Razdan led a 1994 counter-terrorist operation in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) against Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, rescuing hostages despite sustaining severe injuries.
Resilience: Despite his severe injuries, he overcame the challenges to become the IA’s first wheelchair-borne General.
Award: He received the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award and VSM award for his exceptional courage and sacrifice during the operation.

Karnataka Cabinet Approves Sandhya Kiran Scheme Offering Rs 5 Lakh Cashless Healthcare Cover to Pensioners
In August 2026, the Karnataka Cabinet approved the Sandhya Kiran scheme, a contributory cashless healthcare initiative under Ayushman Bharat–Arogya Karnataka (AB-ArK) for state pensioners below 70 years and their families in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
- The scheme will cover around 4.93 lakh beneficiaries, including 3.11 lakh state pensioners and their dependents, with Rs.5 lakh annual family health cover and standardised treatment packages and rates.
About Sandhya Kiran Scheme:
Benefits: The scheme provides coverage for secondary, tertiary, and emergency treatments at empanelled hospitals and aims to ensure financial and health security while reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses.
Funding: The contributory model includes 1.25% from service pensioners and 0.75% from family pensioners, generating Rs.117 crore annually against an estimated Rs.81.75 crore cost with 70:30 beneficiary–government sharing.
Management: Contributions will increase by 0.05% points if utilisation exceeds 85% for sustainability, while Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust handles enrolment, empanelment, and claims processing.
Implementation and Management:The Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust will implement the scheme, with beneficiary registration, contribution collection, hospital-network administration, cashless treatment, claims management and overall monitoring carried out through the AB-ArK system.
AP Govt and CSIR NGRI Sign Pact for Critical Mineral Exploration
On 12 August 2026, the Andhra Pradesh (AP) Government signed an agreement with the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research–National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) for exploration of Lithium(Li) and Gallium(Ga) deposits in the Kadapa Basin, AP.
About Mineral Exploration:
Exploration Area: Geological surveys will focus on the Vempalle region of the Kadapa Basin, following initial mineral indications from Thummalapalle.
- Early studies by the CSIR–NGRI identified lithium concentrations up to 1,000 parts per million (ppm) and gallium concentrations up to 250 ppm, requiring further evaluation.
Funding: The Rs. 140 crore exploration project will receive 100% funding from the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) for detailed exploration and scientific studies of Andhra Pradesh’s critical mineral resources
Strategic Importance: The initiatives aim to strengthen critical mineral capabilities for emerging sectors such as electric vehicles, batteries and advanced technologies.
CoE: The AP Government also signed an agreement with Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad (IIT (ISM) Dhanbad)–TEXMiN to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for mining in the state.
